Sheeptrack Run by Steve=20 Penman

Saturday's here=20 again and its time to get up and pick Rich James up for the Sheeptrack = Run. It's=20 pouring down with rain, what a lovely start.

On = arrival at=20 Rich's house I an welcomed by Claudias smiling face and Tilly's smiling = teeth=20 ready to play. Rich informs me that the two Ian's rang him last night = and they=20 would be at Swinford, we'll see.

John = Milkins had=20 to cry off due to family commitments and was gutted to miss his chance = to sort=20 these two out again.

We = arrived at=20 Swinford carpark and a motorhome is parked in our usual parking spot, = could it=20 of been the intrepid two had slept all night to be on time ( that'll be = a first=20 - Ed ) Nobody emerged from the motorhome so we get changed and still = there is no=20 sign of the two. Just as we were about to leave a car pulled up and out = pops Ian=20 Gillard, evidently after trying to get Ian Barter up who was very tired = (shame -=20 Ed) he hotfooted it to Swinford and was going so fast he missed the car = Park=20 entrance so after calming him down we discuss the route with him and = tell him if=20 he looses sight of Rich just wait and I will pick him up. We then have = our=20 normal warm up thinking nothing else can go wrong.

Off = we go and=20 Ian is right up behind Rich and then I loose sight of them in the gully = thinking=20 that Ian's up for a fast time.

I'm = now starting=20 to think what am I doing here (I know that feeling Steve - Ed) I've got = to loose=20 some weight but before I know it Rich is running back down the track = asking me=20 where Ian was. I thought this was one of Rich's windups but no Ian has = lost us !=20 Rich then heads back down looking for him so I do some hills reps to = fill in the=20 time. Rich reappears but no Ian. We carry on and finish the run and = arrive back=20 at the Car park to find Ian's car but no Ian. We were now starting to = get=20 worried and think how we are going to find him wondering if he had hurt = himself=20 then we suddenly spot him coming in the road entrance rather worse for=20 wear.

A = lengthy=20 explanation ensued and we discovered that he had missed the turning and = had=20 carried on towards Bath almost making the City boundary but the plus was = that he=20 surprised himself with the distance he had run.

In = conclusion we=20 all had a good run, Rich ran the course twice and Ian increasing his = running=20 distance but the two Ian's have still not run the=20 sheeptrack.

( = you wont see=20 them it's for men - Ed ).

STOP = PRESS

Is = Rich James a=20 secret cross dresser?

It = came to light=20 that on one of out Thursday night runs he wore Alex's running shoes = which caused=20 him some discomfort but he did not realise until Alex asked him why he = wore her=20 shoes that night !

What = else does=20 he wear of Alex's  =20 ????????

Rumour has it=20 he's also been down to AVC at Bath looking at a Giant TCR - Now be fair = Rich=20 your not quite quick enough for a machine like that yet, perhaps with a = bit more=20 training..........

Tough=20 Guy - 2003

I = know this=20 along time off but I've just seen a review of this years race on Country = File=20 and it makes the Sodbury Slog and Slaughterford races a Sunday walk for pansies - = now how=20 about a Kingswood Team for January next = year. They do=20 have a race in the Summer but most of us are competing then and anyway = the water=20 they go through is too warm then and from what I saw most of us would = need a=20 year to prepare for the race so if you're felling tough lets think about = a team.=20

As a = starter how=20 about a showdown at this race between me and you Ian Barter=20

or = are you too=20 fond of your bed =20 ?????????????????????????????????????????

27th January=20 2002 Race Report =96 Eric =91the eel=92 = Downey

Better known = as Eric=20 'the e mail' Downey

A = multi-terrain running=20 race over 9 miles of steeply undulating countryside. Whilst = tackling the=20 900ft of ascent and descent, runners encountered very wet, slippy = mud,=20 running water above our knees, standing ponds of water, flooded = fields,=20 stony paths, fields, slippery bridges, treacherous wooden styles = with=20 barbed wire on them, steep hills only climbable on all fours and = holding=20 on to branches, farm tracks and the odd lane.
The weather = summed up my=20 feelings, very wet, misty and drizzly. My wife thought I was mad = giving up=20 a nice warm bed to expend some energy in the = rain.

The =91hut=92 = where we all=20 met up was nice and warm and I bumped into Allison Lucas, Gordon = Robbins=20 and Paul Calabrese (who believes he is up for joining us) of = Bitton Road=20 Runners.

The=20 Course

The first = mile started=20 downhill on tarmac before descending further on a rough stony = track=20 through woodland. I did glance down at my watch to see how I was = doing and=20 ended up with my face in the dirt! =20 It hurt!!!  = My knee and=20 hand bore the brunt of the fall. =20 I was informed, by a fellow runner how stupid I was to look = at my=20 watch while on a steep slippery track!! and that I would not be = doing that=20 again!! As he leapt over me! =20 The 2nd and 3rd miles, after some deep mud, emerged from = the=20 woodland via a lane descending towards the hamlet of=20 Slaughterford.

I looked at = my watch=20 again (this time on firm ground) and could not believe I still had = half as=20 much to do again. Mile 4 takes in a short shale path before = crossing two=20 narrow wooden bridges into open flooded fields. The path follows a = fast=20 flowing stream before turning left to successive styles leading to = a=20 grassed ascent out of the valley. This was murder to get up and I = had to=20 do it on all fours! The branches came in handy to hold on to as = well! The=20 Saturday Morning Sheep Track had stood me in good = stead!

Miles 6, 7 = and 8 are=20 across fields and included a steep muddy descent into a water = splash (40=20 yards of above the knee fast flowing water). Mile 8 continues by=20 descending on a green lane bridleway of increasing severity = towards=20 Widdenham wier.
The last mile commenced on the bridleway then = joins a=20 steeper downhill section of compacted hardcore farm track. A = concrete=20 bridge is crossed before a style leads to the sting in the tail, a = long=20 and extremely steep grassed bank. A further style and right turn = leads to=20 a stony path which breaks out right onto a tarmac lane initially = slightly=20 downhill, but then uphill to the finish.

In=20 conclusion-=20 It was a=20 great race, very wet and muddy but good fun -  Every body was very = friendly and I=20 am starting to recognise a few faces from some of the other local=20 events.  Sorry there = were not=20 more from the Club, but it is still early in the=20 season.

This year=92s race had 382 = entries,=20 with 344 finishers. =20

I=20 finished 33rd  = in=20 1:07, Allison came in at 111th  in 1:19 and Paul = Calabrese=20 finished in 208th =20 in 1:33.

The Slaughterford = 9 is=20 rapidly getting a reputation as a solid race with plenty of = challenges. As=20 the course description indicates it is set in some of the best = countryside=20 in the region with plenty of challenges along the=20 way.

Let's see you = there next=20 year =96 I hope the weather will be better!

CU soon -=20 Eric

Cycling Plus - Fitter, Faster,=20 Further

John = Milkins

Some = of you may=20 remember that the year before last I was a guinea pig in a Cycling Plus = Magazine=20 feature where they selected three people to make them fitter for the = various=20 types of cycling they did. The series did not come to a conclusion due = to=20 various factors like one person selected disappearing to South America = for six=20 months but we did get a picture of the old T Shirt in a national = magazine. Due=20 to the non conclusion I have been selected this year for the new fitness = series,=20 Fitter, Faster, Further.

Basically there=20 are five people chosen this year, two are recreational cyclists who just = want to=20 get fitter. Richard Grigsby co-owner of AVC = in Bath is=20 doing the faster bit wanting to improve his 10 mile TT time and Andy = Cook and=20 myself doing the further. Andy is a superb cyclist finishing high up in = the=20 British Best Allrounder Competion every year and organises=20 the 3 up TT we competed in last year. His task is to improve his mileage = in the=20 12 hour time trial race. Basically a time trial where it is measured in = miles=20 completed in a 12 hour period rather than a timed distance race as mos time trials are.

My = job is a=20 little less daunting but I have to finish a 100 mile time trial in a = reasonable=20 time, what is reasonable I don't know. I've only done one 50 mile TT = before and=20 that hurt so the 100 will be a real challenge, luckily we get good = coaching from=20 Joe Beer who is in charge of the project, unfortunately this is going to = limit=20 the triathlons I do this year ( hard luck Ian ) but hopefully it should = be fun=20 and might make a couple of interesting articles along the way. If lucky = I might=20 be able to get some pictures of the new Kingswood Kit=20 in Cycling Plus - I'll keep you informed about what=20 happens.

E = Mail

Remember you=20 will get this quicker by e mail and save the club postage and get = advised of any=20 late minute events so if you have an e mail address please send me a = blank e=20 mail and I can put you on the distribution list.
