A change of job due = to=20 redundancy saw me heavy in exams and late evenings so something had to = take back=20 stage, still it all seems to have settled down now and at last I have = found some=20 time to edit the magazine - Edit being a word I use loosely as it would = be nice=20 to have some articles to edit - remember the AGM we all promised an = article but=20 very few have arrived, I could fill this newsletter talking about myself = but it=20 is a Club Newsletter for the members so we need input from you - so come = on put=20 pen to paper like Jeremy did this month and send me an article or two, I = know=20 during the winter there is not too much to write about but we are all = racing now=20 so come on send in some articles

Castle Coombe 2 up Time = Trial    =20 14/05/02

By Jeremy = Dale

The=20 only other time I had been to Castle Coombe circuit was on a racing car=20 experience day, so I knew what ever happened, a cycle time trial was = going to be=20 harder, how much harder I was about to learn.

There=20 was a good turn out from Kingswood Tri Rich James and myself, Lee = Francis and=20 Kelly Monteith, Steve Light and Vic, John Milkins and Ian=20 Barter.

After=20 the usual changing, visits to the loo, paying (=A32 each) we got on the = bikes for=20 2 laps warm up Going at No 21 there was a bit of a wait whilst the = nerves grew=20 then suddenly we were on the line and off!

We had=20 agreed a race plan, Rich would lead for the first lap or two, until = things=20 settled down then we would take it in turns changing every 50 revs. Well = that=20 went out of the window straight away! There I was struggling like hell = just to=20 keep up we were doing 58kmph on the flat and he was still pulling away = from me!=20 Rich then added insult to injury by looking back and told me to keep up = and tuck=20 in! If I could I =85.jolly well would I thought!

Things=20 settled down after a while and we got into the rhythm of side wind = across the=20 start finish line, tail wind for the chicane and back straight then a = left turn=20 up the =91incline=92 into the head wind. Rich worked all the time and I = just tucked=20 in and tried to keep up.

We=20 seemed to be going quite well only two teams passed us whilst we were = passing=20 quite a few teams. On about lap 8 we caught sight of one of the KIT = teams in the=20 distance, so started to close them down. Then a bit further on there was = another=20 KIT team so the race was really on! Towards the end of lap 9 we caught = and=20 passed Lee and Kelly, then on the up hill, head wind bit we caught and = passed=20 Vic and Steve, (one of the few positive thoughts for the evening from my = point=20 of view)

Having=20 given it all an the last lap we got to the finish line to be told = =91last lap' so=20 had to do another lap! Just what the doctor ordered! We duly set off = just incase=20 we got it wrong but when we returned it was confirmed by those who we = had=20 overtaken we were right, we had done one too many!

Our=20 time for the 12 laps was 56:13 which I worked out to be 51:34 for 11 = laps which=20 was not bad for Rich and proved he is cycling well at the moment, it = also showed=20 me why the Timed Trial is called the race of truth it certainly showed = me what I=20 need to do and how much=85.cycle a lot more!!!

Now a=20 few weeks later I can reflect on the effort and the event and frankly I=20 thoroughly enjoyed it! I am looking forward to the next one and would = certainly=20 recommend it to any one if only to ride on smooth traffic free roads = (every=20 Tuesday anyway) so get out there and give it a go!

Jeremy

Ed =96=20 They were going well they also passed Ian and myself. It was nice to see = so many=20 KIT Teams out on the event in the club clothing =96 perhaps some more = next time=20

Don=92t=20 forget we are looking for teams for the three up TT in October, we = fielded three=20 teams last year=85=85=85 four teams this year ?

UPDATE

John = Milkins

The = training for=20 the 100 mile TT is now in full flight with weekly information on = training and=20 events going to Joe with the relevant feedback coming back. I must admit = that=20 although I have been training hard my results have been a little = disappointing=20 to say the least, despite trying to race myself into fitness entering as = many=20 10, 25 and 50 mile time trials as time allows.  I cannot seem to reach = anywhere near the=20 form I was in last year and I get a little frustrated to say the least. = I'm=20 having a small leg opp end of this month and I think this must be = affecting the=20 structure of my training because I'm not sure how quickly I will be able = to=20 continue training and how much of my fitness will go.

Coach Joe Beer=20 says not to worry as its still early and I have switched the emphasis = from speed=20 to distance. But I do find my present results a little frustrating = although I=20 did a good bike split on the Gloucester Tri after holding back because I = wanted=20 to do well on a 25 mile time trial the following day. One perk from the = series=20 has been the "bike fit" sessions with Joe Beer, here we adjust and test = cycling=20 position and power output, aerodynamics and measure lactate accumulation = so some=20 real science is going into the series. It=92s not all perks though as we = had to=20 spend the bast part of a day on a photo shoot in Bath for three photos, = still=20 the photographer was the gorgeous Katherine who models in MBUK when they = are=20 short.

Joe = is based in=20 the Lab at Barnstable and a "bike fit" is available to=20 anyone.

Just = visit=20 www.jbst.com for details.

Andy = Cook and=20 myself are being featured in the next issue of cycling plus due out = towards the=20 end of next month so catch the issue for the full = facts.

Bath Half=20 Marathon

This = seems ages=20 ago now but as it was my first half marathon I thought it might be an = idea to=20 put pen to paper. KIT had agreed to meet at Bath Police Station but this = plan=20 was hastily changed when our numbers of competitors, friends and = supporters=20 swelled to around 20 or so people and we were in danger of taking over = the=20 police station and causing a security risk so most of us moved over to = the=20 Sports Ctr. where the race was based.

I = had been=20 training with Simon (does my bum look big in this) Talbot over the last = year or=20 two and this was to be the big showdown. We had talked tactics at some = length=20 and hoped to beat the 2 hour mark as we are both hopeless at running so = after a=20 warm up and abuse shouting to Gary and Richard at the AVC stand we = pushed and=20 shoved our way to the start.

We = were both=20 surprised with how slow the race got under way which both suited us as = it gave=20 us time to warm up again and got pulled along with the crowd for the = first=20 couple of miles and then settled down into a steady pace. All went well = until=20 mile 9 when my legs suddenly got heavy so I reluctantly had to let Simon = go. I=20 seemed to be going backwards but was rather stupidly suffering from lack = of=20 food. I have been told time and time again by Joe to feed after an hour = but=20 drinking a full bottle before the start thought this would be enough, = still you=20 learn by your mistakes. Phillipa went by me on the last mile as I = dragged myself=20 to the finish a lesson well learnt in race nutrition, still I had = finished my=20 first half marathon, not within the 2 hours but outside by ten minutes. = Simon=20 finished in 0ne hour fifty six (I think) so I reluctantly had to accept = the=20 defeat.

There was a=20 silver lining to the story as I had been training my wife and her friend = for the=20 last six months for the race. Luckily I may not practice what I preach = but did=20 advise them to drink a carb mix during the race and was so pleased when = they=20 both finished at around two and a half hours. These two girls had done = no=20 running at all prior to the start of the training and we have been going = out on=20 a regular basis up to the event so I was so pleased to see them finish. = It may=20 not of been a fast time but I felt so chuffed as they came over the = finish line=20 so well done the two Gill=92s and Simon you had better watch out as you = know I=20 don=92t like losing to you.

" = The story=20 behind does my bum look big in this was told to me by his wife I was = going to=20 keep quiet about it but as he beat me at Bath and I do hold a grudge I = thought I=20 would go into press, his wife has encouraged me to publish=20 anyway.

Evidently he's a=20 bit of a poser and when he buys a new pair of cycling or running shorts = he=20 always asks his wife if his bum looks big. It's not a view of Simon I = see very=20 much because I am usually in front but when you next see him give him a=20 reassuring nod and tell him his bum doe's not look big! = "

NB. = That's if we=20 ever see him out on an event he's always got an excuse not to do one but = allegedly he is hard in training?

Wanted

KIT = is hoping to=20 field a relay team at Longest Day but unfortunately Kelly who was doing = the bike=20 section has had to pull out. We need a volunteer to do the bike section. = This is=20 a good introduction to the race so if you're up for it contact Rich=20 ASAP.

Remember you=20 will get this quicker by e mail and save the club postage and get = advised of any=20 late minute events so if you have an e mail address please send me a = blank e=20 mail and I can put you on the distribution list.
